Assist with development and implementation of innovative joining technologies. Apply expertise related to the joining of aluminum sheet products, with an emphasis on the materials characteristics and performance necessary for the successful joining of aluminum using a variety of welding, mechanical fastening and bonding techniques in automotive vehicle manufacture and other applications. Work on multi-disciplinary project teams involving metallurgists, surface scientists, applications engineers and modelers. Assist with critical insight to help drive the development of sheet joining solutions with superior property combinations for customers in the automotive and specialty markets. Work with technologist, who provide technical service and support and carry out laboratory work including the design of basic joining experiments or methods of joint characterization. Interact with internal teams and clients. Represent Novelis in national and/or international conferences. Collaborate with colleagues at Novelis facilities around the globe and with external expert organizations in the value of conducting joining trials or joining process modifications.
Ph. D. degree in materials science/engineering or metallurgy. Requires minimum one year of research and development experience working on material joining and welding including friction stir welding, ultrasonic assisted TIG welding, CSC MIG welding of steel, aluminum and magnesium alloys. Experience working with brazing and soldering process, non-destructive weld evaluation and root cause analysis and mitigation afterwards. Must have experience with DSC/TGA, XRD, SEM, EDS, EBSD and TEM for microstructure analysis; Pandat; WEI WeldPredicator and Sorpas.

The Novelis Global Research & Technology Center (NGRTC) is located in Kennesaw, Georgia, and serves as the global hub for Novelis’ extensive research and development activities. This location serves as the central point for all of Novelis’ technical activities worldwide, including R&D, engineering, and environmental, health and safety.
